Purpose

The IELTS Life Skills B1 test is commonly used for immigration purposes, particularly for applications for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship in the UK.

Test Format

The IELTS Life Skills B1 test focuses on assessing the speaking and listening skills of the candidates. There is no reading or writing component in this test. The test is conducted in pairs with another candidate and an examiner.

Test Structure

Speaking and Listening (22 Minutes)

Phase 1a: Introduction and Interview
  • Candidates provide personal information.
  • They respond to questions from the examiner and interact with each other.
Phase 1b: Exchange of Information
  • Candidates engage in a discussion.
  • They exchange information on familiar topics.
Phase 2a: Listening Task
  • Candidates listen to a recorded audio.
  • They answer questions related to the recording.
Phase 2b: Discussion
  • Candidates discuss a topic related to the listening task
  • They share their opinions and ideas.

You will be expected to:

  • listen and respond to spoken language, including straightforward information and narratives, and follow straightforward explanations and instructions.
  • Communicate information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics, using appropriate formality.
  • Talk with one or more people in a familiar situation, making relevant points and responding to what others say to reach a shared understanding about familiar topics.

Candidates are assessed on:

  • Ability to obtain and convey information
  • Ability to speak to communicate a message
  • Ability to engage in discussion
  • Pronunciation and fluency
  • Listening comprehension

Preparation

To prepare for the IELTS Life Skills B1 test, candidates can:

  • Practice speaking and listening in English regularly.
